Practical tips

Six habits you can start tonight

None of these require a weekend away or a perfect mood. They require about ten minutes and a decision.

  • Six-second kiss

    Long enough to actually notice each other. Do it at every hello and goodbye — it interrupts autopilot.

  • Twenty-minute pause

    When your heart rate climbs, stop and name the pause. Come back at a set time. Flooded people cannot listen.

  • One appreciation a day

    Specific, not generic. "Thank you for handling bedtime when I was fried" lands; "you're great" evaporates.

  • Monthly money date

    Same night each month, thirty minutes, snacks on the table. Numbers first, feelings second, decisions last.

  • Ask, don't assume

    Replace one assumption a day with a question. Marriages die of unchecked interpretations.

  • Protect the exits

    No leaving the room mid-conflict without saying when you'll return. Predictability lowers panic.

    Be curious before you're right

    This week, before you respond to anything that stings, ask one clarifying question first: "Help me understand what that felt like for you."

    Intimacy starts long before the bedroom

    Give six seconds of undistracted affection at hello and goodbye, every day, for seven days. No phone in hand.

  • conflict

    The first thirty seconds decide the fight

    Replace "You always..." with "I feel ___ when ___, and what I need is ___." Say it out loud once before you say it to them.

  • trust

    Trust is built in small, boring deposits

    Make one small promise a day this week and keep it exactly. Name it out loud when you do.

  • partnership

    How can two walk together unless they agree?

    Write down your top three goals for the next twelve months separately, then compare. Circle where you already agree.

  • communication

    Name the fear under the anger

    Finish this sentence for your spouse this week: "What I'm actually afraid of is..."
